Because of its binding ability, sodium bentonite powder is used as bonding material in foundry sands, more commonly known as greensand. Greensand, a mixture of sand, bentonite, and water, is used for metal casting and molding production.

A small amount of fine bentonite powder is also added to low grade iron ore in powder form to act as cast & mold binder and to facilitate the production of concentrated iron pellets for easier handling and storage.
